Typical question, but what rigs are people using at the moment? I’m wondering if it’s time for an upgrade.

I have an old sandybridge i7 with 32 gigs of ram, a titanX, a SSD for the OS, and two 5TB HDDs (one external for backup in case of harddrive failure.) Which is something I’d recommend to everyone, it’s saved me from having to restart everything. It’s a good set up, but 64 gigs of ram just sounds so nice… I’m using iray and daz to render.

Upgraded just last year to i7 with 32 gigs of ram, GTX 745, using 3 external HDDs, the largest being 4TB, separate for my runtime and contents. Maybe next time I upgrade I’ll go for 64 gigs ram.

      • Danno 1 year, 8 months ago

But sometimes the effects can be small, a gaming friend of mine swapped out 32 gigs of ddr3 ram to 64 gigs of ddr4. With a new motherboard it cost him around £450. I didn’t have the heart to tell him ddr4 only uses less power, good for server farms not so good for games that will never need so much ram anyway.

But daz or poser might use that ram quite nicely. Or maybe the money would be better spent on a second gpu.

Before I upgraded to this pc, I did my research, obviously and did consider going for a higher end of ram, but read somewhere that it really isn’t necessary and really does not make so much difference unless you’re doing a lot of heavy gaming or something to that effect. I don’t do pc games at all. My old pc was only at 8 gigs ram, so 32 is big step up for me and it really does make a difference for me once I open up DAZ or even these days, VUE, and start rendering. The most important for me right now is storage – for my contents and runtime library.

Yeah, tell me about it! I can’t wait for larger SSD drives. I’m fairly new to the hobby, but I’ve stripped every item from here and I’ve a crazy amount of content now (thank you so much).

The Titanx was a big boost for me, not only on render times but with the amount of assets it can handle in the view port. I can render pretty big scenes, with 8 to 10 iray figures.

      Hi there

if you want to use 64GB then not sure if you could run on yours, depends if yours is X79 then yes is easy to swap RAM and resale yours old RAM,I’ve done that too

My current rig is build from scratch:

      ASRock X99 Extreme6,
      96GB DDR4,
      E5 2683v3(14cores/28 threads)
      i7-5820k OC to 4.5GHz
I’m using only one CPU at the time and swapping them depending what I do,for gaming i7 for rendering Xeon E5 is beast,Xeon has been pulled from work workstation as we are upgraded to V4 there
      GPU: GTX1080 with Titan X
      plus other bits

I’ve sold my old i7-4790k with everything and bought this build, only GPU,SSD etc stayed from old build

64GB in rendering, this depends,I’ve run for while 32GB RAM and simply for me 32GB is not enough,48GB is not enough as I’ve run X58 too, then I’ve got i7-4790k and this has been proper mistake, sold it within few days as has been lot slower than my old X5670

In 3DS MAX where I render mostly, then there 64GB is just OK,with 96GB I can subdivide mesh add several more modifiers and RAM is still peaking max at 75% and rendering there with GPU simply is not possible, unless I’ve GPU which have 64GB RAM

Regarding the Titan X,its great card and right now older “Maxwell” can be bought for reasonable money which is not bad at all,I’ve bought extra GTX1080 just for testing, still I’m thinking to return the card as Ti is on horizon

If you are not hitting RAM limitation then I wouldn’t upgrade there

And regarding the new platform like X99 and Z170,I would go with X99 if you are want to render,X99 is way better machine and Z170 is great gaming platform, but still for rendering X99 is way above Z170

I’ve paid for my RAM £180 6X16GB DDR4 2133MHz,I do game, difference maybe in gaming is 2-5FPS if I’m comparing against 3200MHz DDR4 CL14 and thsoe RAM will be wasted as I render with E5-2683v3 which is Xeon and this Xeon supports as max 2133MHz RAM

If you are really render only with DS,then adding extra Ti or GTX Titan X is probably wisest option and recommendation

      Hope this helps

Thanks Damien, I’m thinking about dual Titian Xs, as I’m not hitting the ram limitations (maybe I should be more adventurous.) Your set up has me salivating by the way. What a beast! 94 gigs of ram, I didn’t even think that was possible on a personal rig.

I can’t imagine having to swap out the CPU for gaming though. Have you though about a second gaming rig on the cheap?

        • Damien 1 year, 8 months ago

          Hi there

I’ve run 128GB for while, but I sold extra 32GB to friend which has needed for his build.,although he sold it again as his board didn’t supported 16GB RAM stick

Dual Titan X will be probably best option there, depends on yours motherboard and just check how many PCIE lanes do you have,if yours GPU will be running in x8 or x16,difference between two is not so big in rendering

You shouldn’t hit any RAM limitation, just remember running any dual GPU in rendering, you are not doubling the VRAM,just CUDA cores, which means you will render faster with two GPU,just remember in rendering you need switch off SLI

Its easy to swap CPU,but sometimes I rather leaving there CPU for bit longer and test both

Building second gaming rig, right now I can’t do that as few days back, our company made me redundant again and right now I’m unemployed, plus bad health etc its simply too complicating just thinking on that

Hope this helps and best of luck there

Oh man, that’s rough. Can’t ramble on about expensive computer parts when you’ve been laid off and you’re not feeling well. Another option is to just wait and spend the extra money on content, give a little back to the community.

I gave you some points, not pity points but just to say thanks for all the advice you’ve given me and everyone else. But now you are totally eligible for the pity points package.

              Hi there

PC has been build through the last few months and not in one go,I bought every part separately as putting everything in one I couldn’t afford that

My brother bought me GTX1080 as early present, but I will be returning that card as money will go towards to rent,i just can’t afford keep that card

Really thanks for points,I really appreciated for that and regarding my help,I’m always happy to help over here if I know answers or know what can be wrong

I’m still staying with V4 and although I’m hoarding G3 or G2 content I just don’t use that as many over here,I prefer to work with Poser and Poser G2 or G3 is just pain to use and there V4 is best

And thanks again there for points, really appreciated

I…I….cannot digest all that you said 🙁 I just know that you’ve got one powerful machine 🙂 I wish I was as handy at configuring my pc components.

        • Danno 1 year, 8 months ago

Blazer, that just makes you normal!

        • Damien 1 year, 8 months ago

          Hi there

Its good machine, has been build on tighter budget and several parts are reused from my old PC’s and Xeon CPU is ES chip which I pulled from our company workstation and got that chip for free

Regarding the configuring the PC components,if you will be building in future new PC just let me know and I’m very happy to help you with yours PC,building PC is much easier than many people think off

Friend have better PC than me,he have i7-6950x 10 cores/20 threads and OC to 4.5GHz and his CPU cost like my PC all together if I would sell that

Hope this helps and really if you need help just let me know,I’m always happy to help

          Thanks,Damien

      Hi guys

Have look, this is scene with 6 G3F fully clothed and hair plus 2 G2M Zombies HD and Moonshine Diner prop etc

As you can see, this scene took from RAM almost 35GB,almost 6GB from VRAM on GTX1080 which is powering only displays,Titan X is rendering and VRAM usage is 2737MB

Hope this guys help you to decide if you are really need more RAM

      Thanks,Damien

Sorry i can’t post the image seems

        • Danno 1 year, 7 months ago

Shame, I want to see what the beast is capable of. Maybe if you post in the art showcase?

          • Damien 1 year, 7 months ago

I will post finished render and how it looks when is renders,I didn’t expected there I will hit 35GB in one render in DS

Usually I don’t render in DS,but I wanted to test where is limit or how much take this toll on RAM,same scene when I render in Poser Pro takes around 24GB RAM,in 3DS MAX when I render I see max 12GB RAM usage

            Thanks,Damien

            Hi there

Please check my Media,I’ve uploaded to my media right now of the DS running,RAM usage etc

    • Damien 1 year, 7 months ago

I’ve just tested Titan X vs GTX 1080

GTX 1080 Total Rendering Time: 6 minutes 6.53 seconds
Titan X Total Rendering Time: 5 minutes 13.0 seconds

Which means Titan X is still faster in new Beta, hope final build will be better as right now,I’m not sure if people will be happy with their “Pascal” cards

      • Danno 1 year, 7 months ago

Yeah, DS is not a priority for NVIDIA understandably, so being a generation behind is perfect until DS specific drivers are released for the new cards.

        • Damien 1 year, 7 months ago

          Hi there

Tell me about it…They still didn’t released drivers for OSX for their pascal cards,I use OSX for making music and few apps and right now GTX1080 is almost useless

DS performance, not sure,I’ve not used for while DS for rendering there,I’ve used mostly Poser and 3DS MAX where I use Corona Renderer or AMD OpenCL renderer which are very fast on CPU,no nonsense GPU rendering, normal quality render up to 100 passes will take 45 minutes or 1 hour as max
